All gates must open inwards
In areas where bushfires are common, fencing must be made from non-combustible materials or hardwood
Metal fencing materials (and metal parts on timber fencing) must be low reflective and factory pre-coloured
Barbed wire and electrical fencing are not allowed in residential zones
If the fence is located in a koala habitat (or other protected habitat) additional controls/restrictions may be set by your local council
If vegetation (trees, bushes etc) need to be trimmed or removed, consult with your local council to ensure you are not removing species of vegetation that are government protected.
Fencing must be structurally sound, installed in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and comply with the Building Code of Australia (BCA).
If you are installing a new fence or replacing an existing fence that divides your property with a neighbour, it is important to consult your neighbour with your plans and familiarise yourself with the Dividing Fences Act 1991 to ensure you know your responsibilities should a dispute arise.
Rear and side boundary fences must not be higher than 1.8 Metres (1.2 if made from masonry)
If the fence shares a boundary with a primary or secondary road, it must not be taller than 1.2 metres
Fences along the boundary of a secondary road must be 20% transparent (above 400mm) and not have solid piers or posts wider than 350mm
