The Association of Building Consultants says that many accidents are waiting to happen in South Australian backyards, as a result of confusing regulations, homeowners having a poor understanding of pool fence safety requirements and failure to carry out regular inspections.
The Association of Building Consultants has made a submission to the State Government that shows where the existing regime for pool safety inspection fails. It has also developed and submitted a ten-point action plan to rectify the situation.
Murray says that a range of existing complexities, the differing requirements that apply to the development approval date of pools, and an absence of detailed, technical information produced by the South Australian Government for the reference of pool owners are all major causes of concern.
Although the SA Government legislated for swimming pool safety to be upgraded in particular situations in 2008, there has been a number of occasions since this time where pool safety inspections have failed to identify serious issues of non-compliance.
