Maintaining the Exterior of Your Home

Most people focus on the maintenance of the interior of their home and devote far less attention and time to structures outside.

However, it is very important to ensure that external structures are well-maintained. A range of environmental factors can cause significant deterioration that ages the home, causes danger, and results in the need for expensive repairs.

The roof is one of the most important areas of the home to keep well-maintained. The roof should be carefully checked on a regular basis, but particularly after storms and fierce winds.

Gutters should also be examined frequently. Gutters are prone to rusting and this is an issue of great concern when leaves accumulate and pool in gutters. If trees overhang a property, you may need to be especially diligent about clearing your gutters every few weeks during the autumn season.

With extended periods of drought, the persistent drying and shrinking of foundation materials and soil around the house can lead to cracking. Cracks in brickwork can often be easily remedied with proper care of a garden during normal seasonal conditions.

All exposed timberwork on a house, including decks and balconies, should be stained or protected with a protective paint to reduce the risk of splitting and rotting.
